Holi is a traditional Hindu festival which celebrates the world every year. It's a holy "festival of color". The celebration name "Holi" basically came from the name "Holika". "Holika" was the sister of a demon king "Hiranyakasipu". According to Hindu mythology, The king was granted immortality by five conditions. The conditions-

  • He could be killed by neither animal nor human.
  • He could be killed by neither indoor nor outdoor.
  • He could be killed by neither during the day nor at night.
  • He could be killed on neither land nor in water and air.
  • He could be killed neither projectile nor in handheld weapons.
Due to this reason, he started to apply his power to any human being even on animals as his wish. Every one oppressed by him badly. his son "Prahlad" noticed this matter. He made a plan to kill him and free people from his torture.

"Prahlad" convinced "Holika" to help him. They planed a bonfire and during this season they could be killed him by putting the king into the fire. But, unfortunately, that plan won't give them success.
After that, Lord Krishna came to help "Prahlad". He took a cloak of "Narasimha" avatar, which is a half animal (lion) and half human. "Narasimha" caught the king in dusk time on the doorstep which overcomes the immortality clause. He attacked the demon king with his lion claws which were also an ignorance of the immortality clause. Thus the demon king killed. This story represents demon king as an evil and "Narasimha" as the God. After the last breath of demon king, people started to celebrate a colorful festival named Holi.

There is another controversy on this festival's beginning. Lord Krishna's skin tone was dark. So, he afraid of his beloved "Radha" would reject him for his skin tone. Lord Krishna then made a plan. He started a festival of color named "Holi". The reason behind it anyone who loves each other can play it with "Gulal" and Lord Krishna made his beloved face whatever color he wanted. When he did it they become a couple.

The scientific reason is, "Holi" is a festival of Spring. This is a ideal weather to make people weak and a victim of pox. "Gulal" is a primary protection from those diseases during this season. That's the probable reason to thrown "Gulal" the air. It's an ancient thought which I described.
