As we know this is a story of mythology that's why so many controversies occurred to find the origin of this festival. Among so many stories we found two most familiar story on it.

During the exploration of the ocean in between The Gods and the Demons a large amount of poison came from the first level, which may destroy our earth. In that moment no one is capable to short out the problem. Gods are run away to Lord Shiva to prevent the situation. Lord Shiva came and decided to swallow the poison and hold it in his throat. That reason we use to see the blue throat of Lord Shiva. After short out, the problem by Lord Shiva from that night every year on that day Hindu Gods and human on planet earth celebrate the occasion as "Shiva Ratri".
Another explanation is, Once upon a time there was tribal hunter man entered deep in a forest to collect firewood. He lost his way when trying to come back. He was a devotee of Lord Shiva. He stayed in the forest whole night without food and water. He climbed a tree to save him from wild animals and started praying Lord Shiva. That tree was bell tree where he stayed the whole night to save him and praying Lord Shiva. That moment at night bell leaf drooped down from the tree. There situated a "Shiv linga" where the bell leaf drooped. Next day morning when he came from the tree he saw the "Shiva linga". After seeing he bow down his knees. The tribal told everyone that because of Lord Shiva he was alive and returned home securely. Some of said that is a reason to start the festival "Shiva Ratri".
Moreover this two stories there are so many mythological stories for the explanation of "Shiva Ratri".
Some of said, Lord Shiva got marriage in which night that night we celebrate "Shiva Ratri" and someone explains Lord Shiva interfere in between Brahma and Vishnu to stop their fighting.
